Can Mobile Devices Really Take a Toll On Your Health?

We’ve all had parents that say how mobile phones are ruining our health.

The internet has even made a meme out of our parent’s tendency to blame our smartphones for every small disease. Your parents may not be right about your phone causing that running nose. But, according to recent research, but it’s definitely capable of doing a lot worse.

This recent white paper breaks down and analyzes the key aspects of the study: “Assessment of stresses in the cervical spine caused by posture and position of the head” as published in the Surgical Technology International Journal in 2014. Using mobile phones was always said to have medical consequences like weakening the eyesight. But, as a matter of fact,

those problems are nothing compared to the effects of using a smartphone on your posture.

This study was conducted to see how exactly a mobile phone could alter your body’s structure.

The study was based on a simple concept:  People bend their head in a forward direction while on their phones. Constantly using that unnatural position can cause severe physical difficulties and modify bone structures in an undesirable way. And billions of people are falling prey to this epidemic every single day.

This uncontrollable use has been producing an alarming amount of pressure on the tissues of the cervical spine of the users. That pressure causes unwanted spinal problems and bone misalignments. The results of this study were extremely astonishing. It showed that using our mobile phones could be the root cause behind constant backaches and bone problems.

The real objective behind the research was to discover the magnitude of the force applied on the cervical spine as the body is contorted forward while using a mobile device.

For this specific study, the head weight was supposed to be 13.2 pounds, which is the average weight of a human head.

However, this number does not remain constant and seemingly fluctuates when a person is using his/her smartphone. The weight on your shoulders is amplified when your head is aligned at a certain degree:

  • 0° changed the weight from 13.2 pounds to 23-25 pounds.
  • 15° degree added another 27 pounds.
  • 30° increased the total weight by 40 pounds.
  • 45° increased the weight by 49 pounds.
  • 60° added a huge 60 pounds on the cervical spine.

Our heads are bend completely at an angle of 60° when using our mobile devices. That means that the weight on your spine and neck is the maximum it could possibly be. These weights, applied for just a couple of hours each day, could completely misalign your whole cervical spine and cause a long list of severe issues, some of which were discussed in the study.

The study defined proper posture as a posture where the ears are perfectly aligned with the shoulders and scapula when retracted.

At the same time, poor posture occurs when the head is always tilted in a forward position and the shoulders are drooping forward at the same time.

  • Increased pressure on the cervical spine can often lead to degeneration and surgeries. However, with proper alignment of the spine, these issues can be dissipated.
  • A higher testosterone level increased serotonin, and a decrease in cortisol are all signs of a proper bone structure. While a poor posture results in a reduction of testosterone level and serotonin and an increase in cortisol.

The study also put out certain analysis:

  • An average person spends up to four hours of their day with their neck bent looking at a mobile device.
  • This adds up to 1400 hours of extra stress on the cervical spine per year.
  • High school teens may spend an extra 5000 hours annually with their head bent forward.

Technology is seemingly ruling every single aspect of our lives. and the younger a person is, the more hours they are on their smart phone every single day.

This is extremely alarming. The current 2-4 hours of tilted heads is already dangerous enough to ruin the quality of life for most people.

People are spending 700-1400 hours a year, on average, with their head drooped downwards. They are staring at a screen and reading messages or sending out tweets. This ends up creating a poor posture which negatively impacts every process going on inside the body. Poor posture also declines your body’s performance through the endocrine system. Poor alignment of your spine can also result in adverse effects on your testosterone, serotonin and cortisol levels.

The Solution

This research has concluded definitely that while we can’t control or limit the use of mobile devices, we can indirectly counter poor posture. There is an increased need for medical practitioners that can help with fixing a person’s posture. These medical practitioners are chiropractors. They are the world’s defense in the war with the epidemic known as bad posture. Chiropractors do not just relieve patients from temporary pain. They also aim to make the patient’s life easier and more convenient.

Chiropractors can teach exercises to strengthen the spine.  They spread awareness regarding the major cause of the spinal misalignment, so the patient doesn’t have to visit the doctor’s office again for the same exact problem. In short, chiropractors are the key leaders that can help men, women, and kids suffering from spinal problems and improve their posture to help them lead a healthier and prolonged life. So, to sum up the conversation, listen to your parents, they may not hold medical degrees, but they can be right sometimes.

Chiropractic Care – The Best Decision?

Is Chiropractic Care Really the Answer Everyone is Looking for?

Anyone suffering from a long term ailment realizes that good health is one of the most important aspects in anyone’s life. It’s one of the only things money can’t buy. You could possibly argue that spending a ton of cash and paying for the very best medical care in the world could get you good health, but you’d be wrong. There are illnesses that can’t be fixed. And when you find yourself in a similar predicament, you realize that the choices you made in the past that led to this moment.

You could save thousands of dollars from doctor appointments by maintaining better health. You could have less frequent healthcare consultations if you maintain your health, and make decisions that are good for your physical fitness in the long term. You would have the freedom of a healthy life If those said choices were made appropriately to support your well-being.

What Decisions Do People Usually Resort to?

Folks often fear for their safety and the safety of their family and, as a response, invest in expensive health insurances and consider them ‘a way out’ in case anyone gets sick. That is a good decision to some extent. Decent health insurance means that you’ll be able to  give your family the best medical care in the time of need. But, what if you were to change your lifestyle and mold it into something that prevents that ‘time of need’ from surfacing entirely? Isn’t that a fair strategy to lead a healthier life and treat the symptoms before they even start to appear?

Difference Between ‘Healthcare’ and ‘Sick care’

These two terms may seem similar, but they’re completely different from each other. Sick care is the type of treatment you receive after you get sick and the disease is diagnosed. Health Insurance only covers the treatment after the disease has surfaced. Therefore, they only pay for sick care. To understand this better, let’s use a small example: You lose feeling in your leg every now and then. The agency won’t pay for the treatment at this stage of the disease. But, once your leg goes entirely numb, then they’ll sweep in and reimburse you for the treatment.

However, when it comes to healthcare, the case is totally different. Healthcare treatment will start way before the problem has a chance to completely set in. This method is proactive and solves issues before they arise.

Chiropractic care could be featured in both categories; it can get rid of problems before and after they have arrived. However, chiropractic care is one of the only treatments in the world that not only gets rid of your current problems but also teaches your body to avoid those problems completely in the distant future. Spinal and bone misalignment happen over time, and they do indeed relapse if the patient is not careful. Chiropractic care is a comprehensive treatment that prevents degeneration. It also improves system function, whilst ensuring that the same problem never resurfaces again.

Chiropractic Care – The Treatment the World Needs

There’s an old saying that proclaims that a healthy heart has thousands of wishes, goals, dreams, and ambitions. But, when the person is suffering from a sickness, he/she can carry only one.

A person’s health is worthy enough to be well looked after, but people often misunderstand the true definition of health. People spend more attention and money on their cars as compared to their health. They take their cars to the cleaners every week and get it serviced regularly every other month.

But, when it comes to dentists, physicians, nutritionists, and chiropractors, people rarely have the time or money.

You need to assure regular maintenance for your posture and spine in the same way you regularly refill the fuel in your car. Chiropractic care is an extremely powerful tool that only requires you to attend sessions and stay in peak conditions without any medicinal drugs.

Chiropractic care not only assists you with bone alignments, but it also affects other parts of the body. It fixes illnesses such as gastrointestinal issues, fertility issues, menstrual discomfort, and ear infections.

Chiropractic care may seem like something that’s a few steps too far away from modern day science, but as a matter of fact, it’s not. There have been numerous studies conducted to test whether or not chiropractic works. Every study concluded that the overall health of people that participated in regular chiropractic care was significantly better as compared to the people that didn’t.

The best part about chiropractic care is that it doesn’t have to act as an alternative to your current medical program. If you’re already on some sort of medication or other treatment, you’re fully allowed and able to have that treatment accompany chiropractic care. Since both medication and chiropractic are proven scientific treatments, using them together only enhances their individual effectiveness.

Closing Thoughts

Chiropractic care is such a diverse and comprehensive treatment than most folks give it credit for. A chiropractor is a highly skilled practitioner who can do so much more than simply help to alleviate pain. Chiropractic care repairs spinal position, which improves the functionality of the nervous system and, in turn, maximizes mobility and creates a noticeable change in your day to day activities.

Ask any expert, chiropractic care and good health go hand in hand. While good health is achievable through numerous other tested and proven ways, chiropractic care is one of the easiest of those ways. The treatment doesn’t target the symptoms, it targets the root cause of the problems and rectifies it to solve the symptoms. This is the most appropriate way for a person to completely heal and recover 100% health. There’s one thing that you guarantee. A healthy and prolonged life starts with regular chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Care –A Viable Alternative To Opioids

Chiropractic Care  is A Viable Alternative To Opioids

Before we actually get into the main body of this article, we should take a few minutes to rethink the meaning of the word ‘opioid’. Sure, you could use the word drugs, but that wouldn’t cover exactly what opioids are.

So, basically the term is pretty diverse. Opioids mean everything from your typical painkillers prescribed for back pain to illegal drugs smuggled from Afghanistan.

What is the Real Reason Behind Opioid Use?

If we roll back a decade or two, people used drugs purely for the pleasure. It wasn’t for any medical reason, it was purely to get high. There are millions doing the same today as well, but a lot of addicts are actually hooked on stuff you could get from your local pharmacy. All you need is a doctor’s prescription and voila! You have an endless supply of those yummy painkillers.

But, there’s another aspect to this as well. There’s a small population out there that doesn’t really use opioids for fun or because they got addicted to them after some chronic pain. They get addicted to drugs because they don’t have a choice. They need to pop those painkillers every few hours or their pain becomes unbearable. And, when they’re taken off their painkillers, their withdrawal is much worse than any addict’s. So, if you’re also someone being forced to use pills for pain, then chiropractic care is just what you’re looking for.

Do We Really Need to Replace Opioids?

Yes, opioids do the job pretty well. But, that does not mean that they’re a good way to get rid of pain. If you look at the numbers, they’re extremely alarming. According to a research by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention[1], more than 33,000 people died from opioid use in 2015 alone. A great portion of these deaths were caused by regular prescription drugs. And, on average, these prescription drugs that take the lives  of 91 Americans every day.

The American College of Physicians has posted several guidelines recommending drug-free measures to counter pain. In their study, they recorded that the first line approach should be drug-free solutions. They suggest opioids only when absolutely nothing else is working. And, when they were asked what the most effective drug-free treatment was, their reply was chiropractic care.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help?

Chiropractic care is absolutely game changing and the research is there. A recent study named The Association between Utilization of Chiropractic Services and Use of Prescription Opioids Among Patients With Low Back Pain[2] recorded the relation between chiropractic care and prescription opioids in residents of New Hampshire suffering from back pain. This state was picked because medical data was easily accessible and the place is known to have a high percentage of opioids addiction. In 2015, the state had the second highest rate of ODs in the United States.

The research looked at insurance claims from the database provided by the Department of Health and Human Services of New Hampshire. Patients from the age of 18-99 had at least two clinical visits due to complaints of back pain in a three month period. Patients with cancer were not a part of this study.

The next step was to categorize the people that used chiropractic care; the Recipients and the ones that didn’t, Non-Recipients. The study analyzed 13,384 subjects that were divided into these two groups. Then, the data was compiled for 2013-2014 and the numbers are pretty convincing.

  • 19% of Recipients used prescription drugs while 35% of Non-Recipients did the same.
  • The cost of opioids used by the Recipients was 74% less than Non-Recipients that did the same.
  • At the same time, the annual cost for clinical services utilized by Recipients was 78% less than Non-Recipients.

The research concluded that New Hampshire residents between the ages of 18-99 suffering from back pain were 55% more likely to use chiropractic care instead of relying on opioid prescription.

Aside from the science, chiropractic care doesn’t just get rid of the pain. It increases the overall quality of your life tremendously. Here are a few other benefits of chiropractic care.
  • Getting proper chiropractic care has the same effect on blood pressure as high blood pressure medications[3].
  • Chiropractors can help alleviate all types of neck and lower back pain.
  • Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves abnormally. This can limit your movement and even cause breathing problems sometimes. There aren’t many options for scoliosis, but chiropractic care is one of the only therapies that have been effective.
  • Sciatica is a condition where a certain nerve is damaged or pressure. The condition is practically the same thing as when you sleep on one arm and wake up with it being completely numb. Chiropractic care can help get a lot of this pressure off of the nerves and allow it to function appropriately.
  • Greatly reduces inflammation in all parts of the body.
  • Migraines are often caused as the mind’s response to chronic pain somewhere else in the body. By getting rid of those pains, you’ll be getting rid of those migraines too.
  • Vertigo is a condition common after a head injury or concussion. The pain might go away, but it takes a permanent toll on your balance. Meaning that you recover completely, but still stumble a little bit from the aftermath of the concussion, called vertigo. Once again, there aren’t solutions for vertigo patients, but chiropractic has been seen to improve balance by a tenfold.

The Final Verdict – Opioids or Chiropractors?

Any way you think about it, opioids are not a good option. They cost a lot more monetarily, they take a toll on your mental and emotional health as well as worry the people around you. If you’re taking pills solely for pain management, give chiropractic care a shot. It has worked for millions of others and just maybe it will work for you.

The Tyranny of Heavy Backpacks – The Health Problems and the Solution

Heavy backpacks are one of the major problems for kids in schools today. Little kids have to drag around huge bags filled with bulky books, while teenagers just need a book or two to get through with their day. 90% of children say that back pain due to heavy bags was “bad” or “very bad” for them[1].See the problem?

These kids don’t have the strength to carry such bags and end up developing severe back problems. In this post, we’ll be discussing the problems that may rise due to heavy backpacks and follow it up with a completely natural solution. But, before we jump into the main subject, let’s talk a minor detour to talk about which backpacks qualify as a heavy one.

What Should Be the Size of Your Kid’s Backpack?

Basically, the American Academy of Pediatrics reports that the recommended weight should be less than 10% of the child’s own weight while the maximum amount is 20%. This means that if your child weighs 40 kg, ideally, their backpack should be 4 kg, but it could go on to 5 kg. But, anything above that means that you’re putting your child at risk of severe chronic pain at their current age and later in life as well.

What Health Problems Could Rise Because of Heavy Backpacks?

There are a variety of different problems, here’s just a few of them.

  • Kids that wear backpacks over a single shoulder, mainly because they think they look cool, are putting all that extra weight on just one arm. This makes that side lean more as compared to the other one and put themselves at a risk of straining their shoulder and neck.
  • Heavier backpacks will lead to bad posture. If your kid is wearing a backpack for even 15 minutes each day, they could potentially harm their spine and misalign their posture.
  • Backpacks with tight and small straps dig into your shoulders. While this may seem like something that doesn’t do more than create mere irritation, it could interfere with circulation and put unnecessary pressure on the nerves.
  • Other than the direct effects, a big backpack could injure your child indirectly too. For example, they could trip because of heavier bags while passing through narrow places like the aisle of a school bus.
  • Heavy backpacks can greatly affect a person’s balance. And, if your kid is put off balance, they will probably have to live with that impairment.

This is just a tip of the iceberg. If we carried on, we’d probably find a couple dozen stuff that goes wrong when a little kid carries around an enormous backpack. This probably emphasizes the importance of making your child’s bag lighter. Here’s a few things you could do to achieve your goal.

  • Advice your kids to wear both straps.
  • Use thick padding on the bags.
  • Ensure even distribution of weight.
  • Changing to a rolling backpack.
  • Teach your kid to put the backpack at a higher surface to easily wear/remove it.
  • Secure the straps. A simple sewing machine will do the job just fine.
  • Make sure that the bag isn’t loose. Don’t let it lie below the lower back.
  • Keep a close eye on the kid’s daily lessons and only let them carry books that they will need that day. Try your best to eliminate all the unnecessary weight.
  • Teach your child to organize the backpack in such a way that the heaviest books are at the very back so the weight doesn’t pull your kid backwards.
  • A chest belt will secure the bag and will make the content feel lighter.

But, if you already notice signs of improper postures and several of the other effects listed above, don’t worry. There’s a really easy to solution to ensure that the effects don’t last for very long. And, the answers you’re looking for is something called chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Care for Kids

Yes, chiropractic care is also useful for kids. You might have seen seniors visiting chiropractors to improve their movement, but some kids also need this care to prevent future problems. There are chiropractors specially trained to treat kids, so don’t worry about the therapy hurting your kid instead of helping him.

What Can Chiropractic Care Do For My Kid?

It’s pretty straightforward, if your kid has a misaligned posture, or pretty much any problem because of a heavy backpack, a chiropractor will be able to fix them. You won’t just be getting rid of your child’s pains, you’ll be improving their quality of life. And, if you continue with chiropractic care throughout their life, you’ll be automatically making them healthier for when they step into the later parts of their life. Just to sum up the conversation, here’s all you need to know about how chiropractic care can improve your kid’s life.

  • Concentration: Is your child having trouble concentrating? The most probable reason is their bag interfering with the nervous system in the neck region. This impairs a person’s ability to concentrate and in the near future, this condition will be diagnosed as a case of ADHD. Chiropractic care paired with a healthy diet can repair this issue.
  • Proper Growth: Early structural and postural problems can cause lasting problems such as scoliosis. The structural issues damages the nerves in such a way that the body can’t grow normally, leading to stunted or heightened growth. Appropriate care will heal the child’s impaired structure and allow them to grow as nature intended for them to.
  • Sleep: Most kids struggle with sleeping problems. But, do you realize that sleeping problems are actually a reaction of your body to the stress on your nervous system? By relieving some of that stress through chiropractic, your child will actually have a much regular sleeping pattern.

Closing Thoughts

At the end, we’d like to say that even if your child isn’t showing a symptom per se, that doesn’t mean they won’t benefit from chiropractic care. Chiropractors are actually a proactive solution that’ll knock down a huge amount of the problems before they even have a chance to develop. Just book a few sessions for your child, we guarantee they’ll feel better immediately.

Chiropractic Care and Its Effect On Your Sleeping Patterns

Sleep is an essential part of life. That is common knowledge. Saying so is equivalent to saying that the sky is blue, the ocean vast and water transparent. It is an irrefutable fact of life.

There is a reason for it. Most people may be aware of the fact that sleep is important for one’s health. But, the fact remains that they do not know the magnitude at which lack of adequate sleep affects the body’s ability to work.

Sleep revitalizes our brain and prepares us for the new day. In fact, it is the only reason we are able to function every day. The inability to achieve an adequate amount of sleep on a regular basis has extremely detrimental effects on one’s health. But that is not all. If your irregular sleeping patterns persist for a while, the probability of you suffering from one of the following increases, quite a lot:

  • Depression
  • Heart disease
  • Decreased immunity
  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes

What’s the Most Common Way People Are Dealing With Sleep Loss?

In this day and age, where keeping up with the pace of the world around you is more important than to get a good night’s rest, choosing work over sleep is inevitable. Now, while it is true that the only way to combat the detrimental effects of lack of adequate sleep is to regulate your sleep patterns, dealing with the issue that is keeping you awake in the first place is a good start. But, you should learn to put your mind at ease before you go to sleep every night in order for that to be effective,

Currently, millions of people around the world flock to the nearest pharmacies with doctors prescriptions containing names of hefty drugs that have the potential to knock them out cold with just one dosage. According to a study published in 2015, it was reported that Americans spent an estimated amount of $41 billion on sleeping aids alone. What’s worse is the fact that this figure has the potential to rise to a staggering $52 billion within the next 5 years [1]. This shows that the issue of achieving a good night’s sleep is prevalent for people, but they are still unclear on the ways to achieve it.

Chiropractic – Same Effect, Lesser Side Effects

Just like the various issues that ail an individual and keep a good night’s sleep at bay, there are various ways to ensure that you fall sleep and stay asleep throughout the night and reap the full benefits of your 7 hour sleep cycle. While people may fool themselves into believing that they are more than capable of functioning on anything less than 7 hours of sleep, rest assured that their lack of sleep will catch up with them sooner rather than later.

With that being said, one of the most recommended ways to deal with the issue of sleep loss without losing yourself in a pharmaceutical haze is chiropractic care. Not only is it being hailed a miraculous solution, but there is legitimate research being published about it constantly. A research of 221 chiropractic patients was conducted to see whether chiropractic care helped with sleep and a mind-blowing 98% reported that they were witnessing much better sleeping patterns [2]. Here’s how chiropractic care can help with your sleep.

Releasing Hormones

Chiropractic spinal adjustment can release some very specific sleep related hormones which help people sleep better. A person can improve their hormone chemistry by adjusting the misaligned areas of the spine. This also makes one capable of improving spine mobility and its coordination with the nervous system.

Realigning the Spine Helps Neurons

The copious amounts of neurons that lace the spinal cord not only protect the spinal cord from injury, but it also directs the functions of the nervous system. So, a newly fixed misaligned vertebra can not only fix your posture and help with your back issues, but it can also keep the transference of static type message transduction to other organs and tissues in the body. This transduction is primarily responsible for the release of sleep hormones that help an individual sleep soundly all night.

Treating Subluxations

Chiropractic care can also aid with the areas of interference within the spine. These areas are called the subluxations and are responsible for hindering the body’s way of communicating through hormones. Subluxations restrict the communication between the spine and the brain, thus crippling half of the communication in the body. This affects the potential within our body to communicate, perform all tasks at maximum capacity and even interfere with the natural healing process of the body. Thus, with the help of an in-house chiropractor, you can insure a good night’s sleep.

Treating Chronic Pains with Chiropractic

Sleep can be a huge problem if you’re facing some sort of chronic  pain. This is especially true in the case of patients with issues in their back. How can you possibly lie on the bed and sleep soundly when there’s a throbbing pain in your back? Chiropractic care can relieve most of those pains, or at least reduce their severity to the point where they’re bearable.

Closing Thoughts

The numbers are there, the research is there. There’s tons of evidence saying that chiropractic care helps with sleep and absolutely none that’s saying the opposite. So, we encourage everyone to at least try out a few sessions and see how the effects are almost instant…

HOW CAN TACOMA CHIROPRACTIC CARE HELP NECK PAIN?

Our neck, which is scientifically called the cervical spine, is one of the most flexible parts of the body. The neck also supports the entire mass of your head, which is almost 12 pounds. So much weight on seven small vertebrae means that it is very easy to get your neck injured. Even standard everyday activities or incorrect postures can damage your neck and cause severe pain. This pain may not even allow you to turn your head properly and that is why you should see a chiropractor ASAP.

Are Chiropractors in Tacoma Even Helpful?

Research posted in the 2007 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Psychological Therapeutics showed that researchers looked into nine cases that supported the evidence that chiropractic can be more effective as compared to standard medical care. The patients were feeling much better after a chiropractic sessions and in just a few weeks, they were able to completely eliminate their pain.

Visiting a Tacoma Chiropractor

A chiropractor will determine the source of the problem and ask you common questions to understand your posture. For instance, he will ask questions like which side you sleep on, how long do you spend in an office chair, etc.

Then, the doctor will use a little bit of science and perform exams that will make you move around so that he can understand exactly what part of your neck is causing the problem. Other than your neck area, the chiropractor will also go in-depth and try to detect misaligned bones in your spine as well as your shoulder area. If this information isn’t enough, chiropractic care centers also have standard x-ray scanners. If the basic exams don’t work, there are x-rays to help the doctor point out the main problem.

Neck Adjustments

A neck adjustment is a procedure completed by hand where the chiropractor will perform precise stretches to your neck. The doctor will improve the mobility of your spine and restore the previous range of motion. The patient may detect instant relief from the pain as well as any pain and soreness that was experienced in the past.

One session is not enough in most cases. Dr. Dave will design a special treatment plan for each patient. This will include a schedule for visits as well as exercises for you to do at home.
